Landlord and Tenant Board

The Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) was created by the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) on January 31, 2007. The RTA gives residential landlords and tenants rights and responsibilities, and sets out a process for enforcing them. The RTA also sets out the process for resolving non-profit housing co-operative (“co-op”) eviction disputes. The role of the LTB is to:

  • resolve disputes between landlords and tenants through mediation or adjudication

  • resolve eviction applications from co-ops

  • provide information to landlords and tenants about their rights and responsibilities under the RTA

Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is a government department that acts as Canada's national housing agency. Its mandate is to help Canadians access affordable housing options. Providing mortgage insurance to homebuyers is one of its main activities.

As a federal crown corporation, CMHC is responsible for administering Canada’s National Housing Act and is accountable to Parliament through the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development.

 
 

Canadian Federation of Apartment Associations (CFAA)

The Canadian Federation of Apartment Associations (“CFAA”) represents the owners and managers of close to one million residential rental suites in Canada, through 11 associations across Canada and direct landlord memberships. In existence since 1995, CFAA is the sole national organization representing the interests of Canada’s $480 billion private rental housing industry, which provides quality rental homes for more than nine million Canadians. CFAA provides the leading national voice for the residential rental industry, advocating the interests of the industry to the Federal Government of Canada. CFAA believes that a healthy rental market contributes greatly to our national well-being and economic prosperity and that the policies they advocate will benefit landlords, tenants and taxpayers. CFAA also functions as an information exchange among their member associations, providing information about best practices and successful programs across the country.

Federation of Rental-Housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO)

Since 1985, the Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO) has been the voice of Ontario’s rental housing industry and the leading advocate for quality rental housing. The Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario is the largest association in Ontario representing those who own, manage, build and finance, service and supply residential rental homes. FRPO has led the rental housing industry in Ontario for over 30 years, offering public advocacy, representation and promotion, industry research, standards and best practices, education and training along with marquee industry events and awards. Their membership includes a diverse group of rental property owners and managers, from those with one small building or a single rental unit, up to the largest property management firms and institutional owners. Today, FRPO represents more than 2,200 members who own or manage over 350,000 households in every area of Ontario. FRPO also welcomes and represents industry partners as members, including service providers, suppliers and industry consultants.

Landlord’s Self-Help Centre

Landlord’s Self-Help Centre is the only community clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario that provides services exclusively to small-scale landlords across Ontario. LSHC is mandated to educate members of the community in landlord and tenant relations. This occurs through a range of casework services which include general information, referral, summary advice and, in some cases document preparation. It is also evident in the various public legal education programs and projects offered by the Centre. LSHC also involves itself in law reform activities and community development initiatives.
